Taking proactive steps- Adrian’s story

Taking proactive steps- Adrian’s story

Adrian joined the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme after being advised by his local surgery that he was at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Already aware of his health situation, Adrian took proactive steps to improve his lifestyle.

“I found out I was at risk of Type 2 diabetes during an appointment at my local surgery. The nurse recommended the programme, and I decided it was time to take action. I already walked quite a bit, but now I walk even more because I believe it’s great exercise for older people.”

The Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme is a free programme designed to help people at risk of Type 2 diabetes make lasting lifestyle changes. Through group sessions, expert guidance, and practical tools, participants learn how to improve their diet, increase physical activity, and manage weight. The programme empowers individuals to take control of their health and reduce their risk of developing diabetes in a supportive and informative environment.

“I’ve also cut down on alcohol and stick to NHS recommended limits most weeks. I’ve become much more mindful of what I eat—less fatty and sugary foods, more vegetables and fibre, and generally smaller portions. These changes have made a real difference.”

“Since January 2024, I’ve lost almost a stone in weight, and I feel more energetic. My most recent HbA1C reading came back with a comment that no further action was required, which was really encouraging.”

“This programme has had a good and lasting effect on my life. I’m much more aware of what a healthy lifestyle looks like, and I plan to keep it up. It’s made me feel more positive—both physically and mentally.”
