Taking positive steps- Glynn’s story

Taking positive steps- Glynn’s story

When Glynn attended a routine health check with his GP, he didn’t expect anything out of the ordinary. Feeling well and symptom‑free, Glynn was surprised when his blood tests showed he was at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. He was referred to the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme and decided it was an opportunity to take action early.

“I honestly went for what I thought was a normal health check at the doctors. I hadn’t noticed any symptoms at all, so when the results came back borderline for diabetes, it was a bit of a shock.”

The Healthier You supports people at risk of Type 2 diabetes to make realistic and sustainable changes to the way they eat. Through practical guidance, education, and ongoing support, the programme helps participants better understand food choices, portion sizes, and everyday habits — empowering them to reduce their diabetes risk and improve their overall health.

“At first, I panicked. I didn’t quite know what it meant for me or what I should be doing differently. But once I joined the programme, things started to make more sense. I realised there were small, practical changes I could make that would genuinely help.

“One of the first things I did was cut sugar out of my tea, coffee, and other drinks. I also had to rethink my love of biscuits — something I enjoyed a lot. I haven’t cut them out completely, but now I only have the odd one as a treat. I’ve also reduced how much bread I eat, going from regularly eating it to just about half a loaf a week.

“The programme helped me understand how my everyday food choices could impact my health. I now eat more vegetables and fish and pay more attention to what’s on my plate. I’ve also started keeping track of what I eat and how active I am each day. I record my calorie intake and steps, aiming to stay under 1,800 calories a day and to walk at least 5,000 steps.”

“Since making these changes, I’ve lost some weight and I’m definitely walking more. I feel more aware of my habits and more in control of my health. I’m hopeful that my next blood test will show a lower reading, but even now, I already feel the benefits.

“The biggest thing Healthier You has given me is reassurance. It’s shown me that the risks that come with prediabetes aren’t fixed and that, by making sensible lifestyle changes, you really can lower and manage them. That knowledge alone has made a huge difference. It’s helped me take positive steps at the right time — and that feels incredibly important for my future health.”
