Small changes, big impact – Philip’s story

Small changes, big impact – Philip’s story

When Philip was identified as being at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes following a routine NHS health check, it came as a surprise. Despite cycling regularly and not being overweight, Philip’s results placed him at risk. He was referred to the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme and decided to take proactive steps to protect his long‑term health.

“Before joining the programme, I cycled regularly and wasn’t overweight, so I was genuinely surprised to be found at risk of Type 2 diabetes after a routine NHS Health Check.

“Being told I was at risk made me take a closer look at my lifestyle, particularly my diet, and think about what changes I could make.

“Since starting Healthier You, I’ve cut out around 90% of the added sugar in my diet. I’ve also reduced my alcohol intake and removed ultra‑processed foods, while continuing my regular cycling.”

Participants often report weight loss, increased energy, and improved blood sugar levels. Many even reverse their pre-diabetic status. The programme teaches you how to eat well, move more, and take control of your health. With practical tools like recipe books, scales, and behaviour change techniques, you’ll build habits that last well beyond the nine-month course.

“The results have been really encouraging. I’ve lost around seven kilograms in weight and now have a BMI of about 21. Although I’m still waiting for a full health check to confirm the impact on my blood results, I feel confident that these changes have made a real difference.

“Healthier You has had a positive impact on my life. I feel fitter, healthier, leaner, and have more energy. I’m far more aware of my diet and the factors that contributed to my earlier assessment of diabetes risk. The programme has helped me take responsibility for my health and make changes that I know will benefit me long term.”
