Small changes, big results – Andrew’s story

Andrew joined the National Diabetes Prevention Programme (NDPP) as he was considered by his GP at a serious risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Since joining NDPP, Andrew is more conscious of his diet, what he eats and his portion sizes. He told us: “I still dislike most vegetables with a vengeance; however, my wife and I are trying new and different recipes to help the appeal. I’ve never been a big drinker, but when I do drink alcohol, I am conscious of what I drink and how much.”

Since attending his local NDPP sessions – which provide tools and practical advice to help people lead a healthier lifestyle and reduce their chances of developing type 2 diabetes - Andew has started to do more physical exercise to compensate for the time he spends sitting at his desk for work. Andrew was inspired to start swimming, and has since enjoyed this as a hobby, swimming 70-80 laps two to three times per week. “It's not pretty or particularly fast but I enjoy it”, said Andrew. “For the first time in 30 years plus I am now more active than ever.”

Andrew has made positive changes to his diet, too: “I used to drink several cans of Diet Coke each day, along with tea and coffee and fresh orange juice. I’ve since reduced this to the odd can of coke and rarely I’ll have a small glass of fresh juice. Previously, I disliked plain water and drank very little, but now I drink two to four litres per day, by simply adding in a slice of fruit. Who knew it could make such a difference?

“I was a complete chocoholic and would consume multiple bars at any time of day, as meal substitutes, late night snacks to keep me going or just because I liked the taste. Now, they are a treat.

“I am now enjoying my new lifestyle, and I feel far more energetic both physically and mentally than in the last 10-20 years. I’ve had great support from my wife, and we are now more aligned on what and how we eat, and we support each other, especially with weight.

“There is no age too old to make a change to your life. You can improve beyond anything you thought possible. I was massively cynical but have been truly won over.

“Give it go, there’s nothing to lose and everything to gain!”
