Now or never- Jessica’s story

Jessica joined the Healthier You after experiencing gestational diabetes during her second pregnancy. She wanted support in how best to reduce her risk of Type 2 diabetes in a way that would fit around her life.
“I joined the programme after developing gestational diabetes late in pregnancy with my second child. Although I managed it through diet alone, it was terrifying and all-consuming. The thought of living like that permanently was overwhelming. My grandfather had Type 2 diabetes, and seeing the toll it took on his body made me realise I needed to make serious changes, not just for myself, but to set a good example for my children.”
Eating healthily and completing regular physical activity helps to not only lose any weight gained during pregnancy but can also lower the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. The Healthier You NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme will help women who have had a diagnosis of gestational diabetes to achieve this.
“To reduce my risk, I started having my HbA1c checked regularly. I began calorie counting with MyFitnessPal to lose weight and understand my daily intake better. I’ve also significantly increased my physical activity, now doing over 600+ intensity minutes a week. I walk as much as I can instead of driving, and it’s made a huge difference.” “Since starting the programme, I’ve lost 13% of my body weight, which I’m thrilled about. But more than that, I’ve gained energy, improved my mood, and become more productive. I’m no longer making excuses. Even with a tiny baby at the start of the course, I’ve found ways to prioritise exercise and organise my life better. Our whole family’s diet has improved, and I feel like I’m finally taking control of my health in a sustainable way.”
“The programme has helped me so much. I was sceptical at first. I thought I already knew enough about nutrition, but it goes far beyond that. It dives into habits, psychology, and the emotional side of eating. Danielle, our coach, was amazing! She was informative, kind, and accessible to everyone. I learned things I never expected, like how different fats work in the body and why carbs and fibre are essential for heart health.”
“This group has had a profound effect on my life. I told myself it was ‘now or never,’ and I’m proud I stuck with it. I want a long life for my kids, and I want them to see their mum taking care of herself. I’m so happy I did this course and met some incredible, supportive women along the way. I feel bad for those who didn’t stick with it—they missed an incredible opportunity to prioritise their health and future.”
