No longer pre-diabetic – Derek’s story
Derek was diagnosed by his GP as having prediabetes and referred to the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme for support to reduce his risk. Hear from Derek about how he was able to reverse his pre-diabetic diagnosis back to normal blood levels:
“Before I started the programme, I was a chocoholic!” said Derek. “I loved biscuits and cakes, which I had daily! I wasn’t overweight, but I did very little exercise, and didn't give any thought to the sugar content in the food I ate.”
Our sessions introduce principles of lifestyle modifications, healthy eating and understanding the concept of energy balance. Health Coaches are on hand to support throughout the duration of the 13 sessions delivered.
“Since attending the sessions, I take daily walks for at least half an hour, weather permitting, and I also do press ups. I have stopped eating cakes and biscuits and have since replaced them with fruit and walnuts. I have replaced white bread with wholemeal and seeded bread and have cut down on red meats and replaced with chicken and fish.”
After the first few sessions, participants can expect to notice positive changes to their health and overall wellness from implementing the changes instructed by their Health Coach. We end the course by preparing participants to continue their healthy, active lifestyles once they have completed the programme.
“A recent blood test with my GP has shown a drop in my blood glucose levels, meaning I am no longer pre-diabetic. I have made these changes after attending just three sessions and by implementing the course recommendations I have these results already!
“The programme has been brilliant and has made me aware of how the foods I eat affect my body and health.”
