Making informed choices for better health – Rebecca’s story

For Rebecca, joining the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme came as a turning point. While she was aware of her weight, she was shocked to learn that she was pre-diabetic and had very high cholesterol. Determined to improve her health, she joined the programme to better understand the changes she could make to reduce her risk of Type 2 diabetes.
"Before joining the programme, I knew I was obese, but I had no idea that I was pre-diabetic and had very high cholesterol. Finding that out made me realise I needed to take action to improve my health."
The Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme supports people at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes to make positive and sustainable lifestyle changes. Through guidance around areas such as healthy eating and physical activity, alongside the support of others on a similar journey, the programme helps participants develop healthier habits and reduce their future risk.
"Since starting the programme, I've become much more aware of what I eat. I pay close attention to sugar content, reduce starchy carbohydrates, and increase the amount of protein and fibre in my diet. These changes have helped me make healthier choices every day."
"One of the most positive outcomes so far has been my weight loss. I've lost a considerable amount of weight since joining the programme, which has encouraged me to continue making healthy changes."
"The programme has also changed the way I think about food. I now stop and consider what I'm eating and whether I really need to eat. It's helped me become much more mindful of my habits and the choices I make."
"I've particularly benefited from the group discussions and the support of my coach. Having encouragement and the opportunity to learn from others has made a real difference and helped me stay motivated throughout the programme."
"Overall, the programme has given me the knowledge and support I needed to take control of my health. I'm proud of the progress I've made so far and I'm looking forward to seeing further improvements as I continue on my journey."
