Making changes- Amy’s story

Making changes- Amy’s story

After experiencing gestational diabetes during her pregnancy, Amy was determined to take control of her health and reduce her risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. She was advised to join the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme to support her on this journey.

“I joined the programme because I was advised of the increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes after having gestational diabetes during my pregnancy. I wanted to take every step possible to avoid that outcome, and this programme was recommended to me while I was still pregnant.”

“Since starting, I’ve taken several actions to improve my health. I’ve lost weight, changed my eating habits, and become more aware of how different foods affect my body. I’ve also made changes to my exercise routine and drinking habits, all of which have contributed to an overall healthier lifestyle.”

The programme offers supportive group-based sessions over nine months, delivered by trained Health Coaches either face-to-face, remotely via Teams, or through a digital app. Participants learn about nutrition, physical activity, emotional wellbeing, and sustainable lifestyle changes to help prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

“So far, I’ve lost four stone since having my baby, over two stone of that during the programme itself. I feel confident that I’ll be able to maintain this weight loss because of the sustainable habits I’ve developed. I now understand food and its impact on my body much better, which gives me the tools to live a healthier life long-term.”

“The Healthier You programme gave me the structure and support I needed to make lasting changes. I had already planned to improve my lifestyle, but the programme helped me stay accountable through monthly check-ins and gave me the tools to succeed. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved and grateful for the guidance that helped me get here.”
