Learning the balance for better health – Pauline’s story

Learning the balance for better health – Pauline’s story

Before joining the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme, Pauline was already aware that her blood sugar levels were beginning to rise and was making efforts to improve her diet. While she had been consciously reducing sugar, empty calories and ultra-processed foods, she wanted to better understand how to manage her risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and make changes that would have a meaningful impact on her long-term health.

The Healthier You supports people at risk of Type 2 diabetes to make realistic and sustainable changes to the way they eat. Through practical guidance, education, and ongoing support, the programme helps participants better understand food choices, portion sizes, and everyday habits — empowering them to reduce their diabetes risk and improve their overall health.

“Before the programme started, I was aware that my blood sugar levels were creeping up. I was already trying to cut down on sugar, empty calories and ultra-processed food, but I wasn't always sure if I was making the right choices.”

“One of the biggest things I learnt was that I was eating too much fruit and cheese and not enough carbohydrate. The programme helped me understand what a balanced diet should look like and how important portion sizes are.”

“Since starting the programme, I've been following the recommended portion sizes and paying much more attention to the balance of foods I'm eating. It's helped me become more aware of how different foods contribute to my overall health. I'm not particularly keen on exercise, but I've made a conscious effort to increase my step count. I also volunteer twice a week, and both roles require me to use different muscle groups, which has helped me become more active without it feeling like formal exercise.”

“The changes haven't always been easy, but they've been realistic and manageable enough to fit into my everyday routine, which has made them easier to maintain.” “Since joining the programme, I've lost a stone compared to this time last year, and my HbA1c reading has reduced from 46 to 43. While I know there's still more work to do, seeing those results has given me confidence that the changes I'm making are moving me in the right direction.”

“I've noticed a real difference in how I feel day to day. I don't feel as sluggish as I used to, and I feel much more comfortable in my clothes. The programme has helped me better understand my health; make informed decisions about the food I eat and find practical ways to be more active. It's given me the knowledge and confidence to continue making positive changes and reducing my risk of Type 2 diabetes in the future.”
