It’s never too late to make a change – Alexander’s story

It’s never too late to make a change – Alexander’s story

For Alexander, joining the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme came as a surprise. A lifelong sports enthusiast, regular triathlete, and active tennis and padel player, he considered himself fit and healthy. However, after several pre-diabetic blood sugar readings, he realised there was more he could do to reduce his risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

"I’ve been involved in sport all my life and considered myself very fit. I wasn’t overweight and thought I had a healthy diet, so I was shocked when my blood sugar readings continued to show that I was pre-diabetic. When my reading increased to 46, I knew I needed to take action and decided to join the programme."

Our session delivery is targeted to support participants adapt to the lifestyle and diet changes they have made, ensuring they are able to sustain changes and move forwards post programme. Our Health Coaches provide practical advice on healthy eating, food choices, portion control and understanding nutritional information, helping participants make realistic and sustainable changes to reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

"While exercise had never been a problem for me, the programme helped me realise that I had formed some unhealthy eating habits. I learned more about the impact of white starchy carbohydrates, sugary snacks and alcohol on my health, and I began making changes straight away."

"Since joining the programme, I’ve switched to wholemeal alternatives, reduced snacks, cut out sweets and cakes, significantly reduced alcohol and become much more aware of food labels and portion sizes. These changes have been surprisingly easy to maintain and have become part of my everyday life."

"The results have been really encouraging. My blood sugar readings have fallen from 46 to 43, I’ve lost around nine kilograms in weight, and I feel fitter than ever. I’m hoping to improve my readings even further at my next check-up."

"The programme has had a massive and very positive impact on my life. In fact, I’d describe it as life changing. I enjoy my new diet, I feel healthier, and I can’t see any reason to go back to my old habits."

"Overall, I’m extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to take part. The programme has given me the knowledge and confidence to make lasting changes, and I’m pleased to be taking positive steps to reduce my risk of Type 2 diabetes."
