Inner health – Lisa’s story

Inner health – Lisa’s story

Lisa was referred to the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme by her GP, following a routine check up where she was diagnosed as prediabetic.

Lisa was shocked when she received her results, and immediately acted on trying to reduce her risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Lisa shared: “Before joining Healthier You, I would eat a packet of sweets for my tea. I was slim, so I didn't think it mattered. I was surprised when I found out I was prediabetic but realised that I'd given myself the condition by swapping meals for sweets.”

Our qualified Health Coaches are on hand to support and provide guidance on the basic principles of healthy eating, demonstrating how to use self-monitoring behaviour whilst increasing physical activity levels. “As soon as I was diagnosed, I stopped eating sweets and any form of sugar, and I lost a stone in three months as a result.

“I started my journey with Healthier You, and realised that I still wasn't eating healthily, as I had swapped sweets for fats. Since attending the sessions, I’ve learnt a lot about diet and lifestyle and I now eat a lot healthier, with an hour of walking every day, and have lost 7kg in weight!

“My annual blood test showed that my blood glucose levels are back in the normal range, meaning I am no longer prediabetic!”\

Our sessions help participants understand the influence of different types of sugars on health, weight control and diabetes prevention. Participants can expect to feel fitter, healthier and happier after their first few sessions, and are prepared with how to maintain their lifestyle changes going forward.\

“The course was very informative, you think you know about healthy eating, and exercise, but this course opened my eyes to lots of little things that I didn't know. I'm taking my new learnings and skills into my new healthy 'later life'.”
