Feeling happier and healthier- Rachel’s story

Feeling happier and healthier- Rachel’s story

Over the past few years, Rachel noticed gradual changes to her health. During the pandemic, her weight increased and her eating habits became less structured. She found herself grazing throughout the day, skipping regular meals, and later experienced the challenges that came with perimenopause.

“A routine blood test showed that I was at increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, which was a real wakeup call for me. I wanted to take control of my health before things got worse, so I decided to join Healthier You: the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme.

“Since starting the programme, I’ve made positive and realistic changes to my lifestyle. I now eat regular, balanced meals and feel much more confident controlling my portion sizes. I snack far less than I used to, which has helped me make healthier choices and has even saved me money.

“These changes have already made a difference. I’ve lost some weight, but more importantly, I feel better about myself again. My blood glucose levels have improved too, falling from 42 to 40, which reassured me that the changes I’m making are working.”

Participants often report weight loss, increased energy, and improved blood sugar levels. Many even reverse their pre-diabetic status. The programme teaches you how to eat well, move more, and take control of your health. With practical tools like recipe books, scales, and behaviour change techniques, you’ll build habits that last well beyond the nine-month course.

“I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed the group sessions. I wasn’t expecting to like them as much as I did, but it was a pleasure to see everyone every few weeks and share our experiences. We all had something different to contribute, and I found the support really motivating. Overall, it was a great experience, and I feel both healthier and happier because of it.”
