Eating regularly – Christine’s story
Before Christine was referred to the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme, she was made aware of being pre-diabetic and tried to make the necessary changes to reduce her risk. After some time, Healthier You was suggested by her GP for additional support.
Our NHS approved sessions provide fun and interactive support and advice in a group setting with like-minded people. Health Coaches are on hand to support those who join, with getting started, sustaining change, and moving forward.
Christine told us: “Prior to joining Healthier You, I didn't eat breakfast, often missed lunch, and would end up only eating a main meal in the evening. I have been pre-diabetic for several years, my weight was higher than it should be and as I live alone, I tended to eat more processed food than I should for convenience.”
Participants can learn the basic principles of healthy eating, and how to make every day active whilst becoming more aware of the roles that different foods play in a balanced diet.
“Since attending the sessions, I now know to eat my meals from a smaller plate, to monitor portion control, I’ve increased my intake of fresh vegetables, cut out butter and limited the amount of bread I have.
“I’m now walking further than I did before and have learned how to maintain a healthier diet which has resulted in an 8kg weight loss. I now have breakfast every day and give more thought to meals, planning what I am going to have, particularly for lunch.”
The Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme focuses on mindful eating and planning to regulate appetite and support weight control. Combined with increased activity and exercise our participants can set themselves up to reduce their risk of developing diabetes.
