Breathless to breathing easy- Barbara’s story

Barbara joined the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme after being diagnosed as prediabetic. Despite not having a sweet tooth, she was surprised by the diagnosis and recognised that her weight and breathlessness were affecting her daily life.
“I knew I was overweight and walked a bit, but not much, mainly because I got out of breath easily. I was surprised to be diagnosed as prediabetic, especially since I didn’t have a sweet tooth. That diagnosis was the push I needed to make a change.”
“Since starting the programme, I’ve lost two stone and ten pounds. I drink less alcohol, eat more fruit and vegetables, and I’ve stopped snacking on biscuits. My energy levels have gone up, and exercise doesn’t feel as daunting anymore. Halfway through the course, my sugar reading had already dropped by one point.”
Participants often report weight loss, increased energy, and improved blood sugar levels. Many even reverse their pre-diabetic status. The programme teaches you how to eat well, move more, and take control of your health. With practical tools like recipe books, scales, and behaviour change techniques, you’ll build habits that last well beyond the nine-month course.
