Changing the approach- Darren’s story

Darren’s health had gradually been declining for a long period of time. He was doing very little exercise, eating large amounts of junk food, and often felt unwell. A routine blood test revealed that his HbA1c blood sugar level was 45, placing him in the prediabetic range and increasing his risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
“When I was referred onto Healthier You: the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme by my GP practice, I knew something needed to change. Hearing that my blood results put me at risk of Type 2 diabetes was a wakeup call, and I wanted to act before my health deteriorated any further.
“Since starting the programme, I’ve completely changed my approach to food and activity. I focus on portion control and avoid junk food, processed red meat and snacking. I now eat much more healthily, especially vegetables. I also make a conscious effort to stay active every day by walking more, doing household chores, taking the stairs, and choosing to walk instead of driving whenever I can.”
The Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme is a free programme designed to help people at risk of Type 2 diabetes make lasting lifestyle changes. Through group sessions, expert guidance, and practical tools, participants learn how to improve their diet, increase physical activity, and manage weight. The programme empowers individuals to take control of their health and reduce their risk of developing diabetes in a supportive and informative environment.
“The results have been lifechanging. I’ve lost a significant amount of weight, dropping from 112.4kg to 89.3kg – a reduction of around 20%. My HbA1c level has fallen dramatically from 45 to 29, and I now have far more energy than I use to. Overall, I feel much better both physically and mentally.
“Taking part in the programme has had a very positive impact on my life. The programme gave me the knowledge, structure and motivation I needed to make lasting changes.”
