Building healthier habits and finding motivation – Olivier’s story

Before joining the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme, Oliver had created unhealthy habits out of convenience. Joining the programme gave him an opportunity to rethink these habits, build greater discipline and connect with others facing similar challenges.
“Before joining the programme, I was paying for a gym membership but never going. I would drink three cans of Red Bull a day and have a croissant for breakfast. Living on my own was also a factor, as I often relied on ready-made meals rather than cooking for myself.”
“Joining the group was really beneficial. Rather than saying I learnt everything from scratch, I would say the programme re-taught me how to be more disciplined. Listening to a fantastic group of people who were experiencing the same barriers as me made me realise that I wasn’t fighting the battle to become healthier on my own.”
The Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme supports people at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes to make positive and sustainable lifestyle changes. Through guidance around areas such as healthy eating and physical activity, alongside the support of others on a similar journey, the programme helps participants develop healthier habits and reduce their future risk.
“Since starting the programme, I’ve made some big changes to my lifestyle. I’m eating healthier, preparing my own meals to take to work and have returned to the gym. I’ve also changed the way I think about certain foods. My favourite dessert, tiramisu, is now something I enjoy as a treat rather than something I have every day.” “Over 12 months, I lost 20kg, with 10kg of that during the programme. I’ve also gone back to the gym and now cook with my partner nearly every day. For me, the results haven’t just been about losing weight. I’ve also become more disciplined and aware of the choices I make.”
“The guidance I received throughout the programme was extremely valuable. Dan was a fantastic supporter who was non-judgemental and understanding of the challenges we faced. Having that support, as well as a network of people experiencing similar difficulties, was an enormous help.”
“I would recommend the sessions to anyone who wants to become healthier. It has been a fantastic journey and has given me the knowledge, discipline and motivation to continue making healthier choices on my own.”
