A life-changing journey to better health – Sarah’s story

For Sarah joining the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme provided much-needed support following a pre-diabetes diagnosis. Despite already attending Slimming World and regularly going to the gym, Sarah was unsure what more she could do to reduce her risk of Type 2 diabetes, particularly while managing a chronic pain condition.
"Before joining the programme, I had been diagnosed with pre-diabetes with a marker of 43. I had reversed pre-diabetes before through Slimming World, but this time I wasn't sure what else I could do as I was already attending a gym. Managing a chronic pain condition also made things more difficult, and I felt very ashamed of my diagnosis."
The Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme supports people at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes to make positive and sustainable lifestyle changes. Through guidance around areas such as healthy eating and physical activity, alongside the support of others on a similar journey, the programme helps participants develop healthier habits and reduce their future risk.
"Since starting the programme, I've become much more aware of what I eat and drink and the choices I make every day. Inspired by the course, I also completed a sponsored 5k run and continued attending the gym and Slimming World. The programme gave me the knowledge and motivation to keep moving forwards."
"The results have been incredible. I've reversed my pre-diabetes, reducing my HbA1c marker from 43 to 41. I've also improved my self-esteem, developed a better understanding of how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and achieved a 5k run in under an hour in support of Wakefield Hospice."
"One of the most valuable parts of the programme was the people. I made friends and received amazing support from my coach, Rebecca, as well as Georgia and Katie. Their encouragement helped me realise that I can achieve things I never thought possible."
"The programme has genuinely changed my life. Although I'm sad that it has come to an end, it has given me a way forward. Rather than being an ending, it feels like a new beginning and a healthier start. I'll always be grateful for what I've achieved and the positive impact it has had on my life."
"Overall, taking part in the programme has been life-changing. Reversing my pre-diabetes, improving my confidence and gaining the knowledge to look after my health has given me a strong foundation for the future."
